Chapmanbdsp Engineering Supports Opening of Six Senses London at the Landmark Whiteleys Regeneration

Six Senses in London has opened within the historic Whiteley's building in Bayswater, marking a significant milestone in the £1 billion regeneration of one of the capital's most iconic heritage sites.

Chapmanbdsp played a pivotal role in bringing the project to life, delivering MEP, environmental, fire engineering and vertical transportation consultancy across the wider redevelopment, as well as specialist engineering design for the new luxury hotel.

The transformation of Whiteleys, the wider complex that now houses Six Senses, represents one of London's most complex and high-profile heritage redevelopments.

The project carefully restored the Grade II listed facade and dome of the former department store while introducing a vibrant mixed-use destination including luxury residences, retail, restaurants, cinema and hospitality spaces.

At the northern end of the scheme sits the recently opened Six Senses London hotel, where chapmanbdsp's engineering expertise assisted in integrating the contemporary building services within a sensitive historic structure.

The luxury wellness-focused hotel features 110 guestrooms arranged across seven floors, with upper levels benefiting from terraces and gardens that create a calm retreat above the city.

Guests enter through the restored historic entrance into an elegant lobby space, where restaurants and bars unfold around a bold feature staircase.

A dedicated social and wellness club on the second floor forms the heart of the hotel's offering, combining co-working spaces, a central bar and lounge, a restaurant and a range of wellness rooms designed for both members and guests.

A standout feature of the showcase kitchen is the open-fire oven, introduced at the client's request to display solid fuel cooking for guests. This created a complex fire strategy for chapmanbdsp, as managing fume build-up required specialised ventilation systems to ensure safety and compliance with regulations.

Below ground, the hotel has an extensive spa and fitness experience. A 20m indoor swimming pool anchors the spa circuit, which also includes communal and gender-specific saunas and steam rooms, alongside up to 12 treatment rooms.

Specialist wellness facilities including a floatation room, a sensory room and a cryotherapy suite complement a 325m2 gym and additional studio spaces.

The diverse treatment offerings required chapmanbdsp to deliver complex engineering services while developing coordinated strategies for closely integrated systems.

Delivering these facilities within a historic building required innovative engineering solutions. The listed external walls restricted ventilation placement, so chapmanbdsp worked closely with the project team to develop highly integrated building services that could be discreetly incorporated within the structure while preserving its architectural integrity.

One of the project's most significant technical challenges arose from planning restrictions that prohibited the placement of plant equipment on the roof to preserve rooftop spaces for private amenity terraces.

This constraint required a rethinking of the servicing strategy. In response, chapmanbdsp developed a bespoke engineering solution that relocated all major plant infrastructure to newly constructed basement levels, increasing the building depth from 4m to 18m.

The design incorporates a sophisticated heat rejection strategy that also performs multiple functions, including exhaust ventilation, smoke ventilation and generator ventilation. This multi-use approach allowed complex systems to operate efficiently while minimising spatial impact within the historic structure.

Across the wider redevelopment, chapmanbdsp's role extended beyond the hotel. The practice provided engineering consultancy for the entire mixed-use scheme, which spans approximately 87,000m² and includes residential spaces, retail, dining and leisure facilities.

A central energy centre forms the backbone of the development's infrastructure, delivering a localised district heating and cooling network supported by high-voltage electrical distribution serving all assets across the site. The retail and leisure components alone include around 6,500m2 of food and beverage space and 21 retail units, creating a dynamic new destination for West London.

For chapmanbdsp, the project demonstrates the practice's ability to deliver complex engineering solutions within highly constrained heritage environments while supporting ambitious architectural and sustainability goals. The successful opening of Six Senses London at Whiteleys marks not only the revival of a historic London landmark, but also a showcase of how innovative engineering can unlock the potential of historic buildings for modern, sustainable use.

Historic Routemaster Buses Take to the Streets to Mark 70 Years of Public Service

A special fleet of iconic London Routemaster buses will return to the capital’s streets today, Sunday 8th February, to mark the 70th anniversary of the Routemaster entering public service.

The commemorative road run is being organised by the Routemaster Association with support from Transport for London (TfL) and London Transport Museum and will recreate Route 2, the very route on which RM1, the first production Routemaster entered passenger service in 1956.

The event will begin with RM1 and other buses gathering at the Ace Café at 09:30am. From there, RM1 will lead a convoy to Golders Green Station and then follow the historic Route 2 through London, finishing at Crystal Palace where members of the public are welcome to see the vehicles up close, speak with owners and crews, and photograph these beautifully preserved buses.

The Routemaster bus remains one of the most recognisable symbols of London, celebrated worldwide for its innovative design, durability, and contribution to public transport history. Many of the vehicles taking part are privately owned and maintained by enthusiasts who are passionate about preserving this important part of Britain’s transport heritage.

Today, RM1 is cared for by London Transport Museum at its Depot in Acton as part of its historic collection documenting London and its journey over the past 200 years.

The event is free to attend, with no tickets or booking required, making it an ideal day out for transport enthusiasts, families, photographers, and anyone with an interest in London’s history.

Speaking ahead of the event, David Lee, Chairman of the Routemaster Association, told That's Business: “The Routemaster is more than just a bus, it’s a design icon and a symbol of London itself. Recreating the very first route it operated on, 70 years to the week after RM1 entered service, feels like a fitting and special way to mark this milestone. We’re delighted to welcome the public to join us."

Talking about the significance of RM1 and this milestone anniversary, Matt Brosnan, Head Curator at London Transport Museum said: ‘We’re delighted that RM1 can take part in this special Routemaster Association convoy marking 70 years since it first entered service.

"As the very first Routemaster, RM1 is an icon of London’s transport history, and we’re pleased to have recently completed its restoration at our Depot in Acton, where it continues to be carefully maintained by our team.

"It’s great to join up with the Routemaster Association and Transport for London for the opportunity to see RM1 back out on the road for this anniversary celebration. Members of the public will also be able to enjoy RM1 up close at our upcoming Depot open days in April, where it will be on display as part of our historic vehicle collection."

Tottenham’s Small Business Scene Doubles as Major Events Transform the Area, GoDaddy Research Reveals

The concentration of small businesses in Tottenham has doubled in the past four years as the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium became a regular home to major international events such as NFL games, new data from GoDaddy reveals.

The trend highlights how large-scale cultural events can spark entrepreneurship and create ripple effects across local economies.

The analysis comes from the GoDaddy Small Business Research Lab, an international research initiative that studies the economic impact of more than 600,000 small businesses in the UK and the attitudes of the owners who start and run them.

Each constituency earns a ‘microbusiness density’ count – the number of small businesses per 100 people.

Tottenham’s microbusiness density rate has soared from 1.4 in September 2021 to 2.8 this year. September 2021 was also when the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium hosted the Anthony Joshua vs Oleksandr Usyk heavyweight title bout – the first major event at the venue after Covid-19 restrictions lifted.

Since then, eight NFL games have been staged at the ground, from Atlanta Falcons’ 27-20 win over the New York Jets in October 2021 to Denver Broncos’ 13-11 triumph over the same team last weekend. Tottenham has cemented its status as a global music destination, drawing chart-topping artists including Guns N’ Roses, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, and Post Malone between 2022 and 2024.

In parallel, despite mixed fortunes on the pitch, clamour to watch Tottenham Hotspur home games has increased, with around 90,000 people currently on the club’s season ticket waiting list. The official Tottenham Hotspur website estimates that around 2 million people attend events at the stadium each year.

Alexandra Rosen, Economist and Head of the GoDaddy Small Business Research Lab, said: “Tottenham is changing rapidly – it’s attracting new investment, new residents and new ideas. The stadium’s major events have added visibility, while local entrepreneurs have been building from the ground up.

This mix of top-down investment and grassroots activity is creating real momentum – a sign of how regeneration and entrepreneurship can grow together to strengthen local economies.”

In September 2025, GoDaddy launched its Entrepreneurial Power Rankings in the U.S. – analysing small business communities in cities that are home to NFL teams. It found that 29 of the 30 cities had a microbusiness density rate higher than the national average.

Don't Bin Your Old Windows 10 Machines: London Social Enterprise Offers Better Option Than IT Scrapping

As companies across the our capital city, London, upgrade their IT hardware, a locally-based social enterprise outfit is urging businesses to rethink their disposal process for old Windows 10 laptops and computers

SocialBox.Biz is calling on corporate IT departments to "Call Before You Scrap It," offering a them a sustainable and socially impactful alternative to standard IT recycling and disposal methods.

The initiative provides a win-win for London businesses and the community by securely reusing functional tech instead of scrapping it.

A win for the environment

According to SocialBox.Biz, reusing a single laptop can save approximately 316 kg of CO2 emissions, that's more than double the savings from recycling, by avoiding the energy-intensive manufacturing process for new devices.

By donating old computers, companies can significantly reduce their Scope 3 emissions, contributing to a more sustainable and circular economy. A win for the community, too.

Beyond the environmental benefits, the campaign has a powerful social purpose. SocialBox.Biz provides reused computers upgraded with free open source software to vulnerable individuals who lack basic computer access, including homeless people moving into permanent accommodation, and the elderly living on small pension unable to afford any kind of computer.

For many, this technology is a lifeline, offering access to education, job opportunities, and vital social connections. The donated machines are securely wiped and upgraded with open-source software, ensuring both data privacy and usability.

Seamless donation for businesses

SocialBox.Biz provides a straightforward process for corporate donors, handling the entire process to ensure security and convenience.

Certified data wiping is provided, with a full chain of custody and destruction certificates for IT audits.

Devices are collected directly from offices across London and the UK.

Donating allows companies to build a strong corporate social responsibility (CSR) and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) profile.

A decade of impact

With over a decade of experience, SocialBox.Biz has a proven track record of creating positive social change through its tech reuse programs. Through long-standing partnerships with charities such as Age UK London, The Passage in City of Westminster, and the C4WS Homeless Project in Camden and others suitable reusable devices have already been distributed to those in need.

Vibrant Queens Parade Re-opens In Willesden Green

This week, the Queens Parade retail space in Willesden Green is once again open for business with a vibrant collection of start-up businesses and projects. The parade of eight shop units and offices - which has not been in retail use for many years - is now home to thirteen creative enterprises that offer a range of goods and services, from home-wares and interior design, to an art gallery and a vintage clothes emporium.

The former textiles building has been secured by the New Windows on Willesden Green project on a 'meanwhile' lease to give these fledgling businesses a chance to try out their ideas in a well-located high street space. The building's run-down façade is being given a new look, care of designer Kieren Jones, and the interior decorations have been carried out with the help of Painting and Decorating students from the local College of North West London.

The reactivation of this underused high street building is part of the New Windows on Willesden Green project supported by the Mayor's Outer London Fund. It is being delivered for Brent Council and Design for London by The Architecture Foundation in collaboration with Meanwhile Space and Blue Consulting with the view to bring positive change and new audiences to Willesden Green.

A rigorous selection process was undertaken to choose which businesses and projects would benefit most from the space, contribute best to the local community, complement the existing businesses on the high street and work well together to create a new destination in Willesden Green.

Queens Parade will be hosting a series of exciting events, activities and workshops over the coming months, kicking off with its official launch celebration on 29 March 2012 from 5:30pm.

Over the forthcoming holiday there will also be events which are free and open to all, improving the appearance of the High Road and marking a new addition to Willesden Green's retail and cultural offer. There is also the opportunity to hone your own business skills at one of the Library Lab workshops in the Willesden Green Library Centre.

Please see http://willesdenwindows.com/ for further details.

Eddie Bridgeman, Director of Meanwhile Space, said "The people and projects who came forward have enabled New Windows on Willesden Green to become a real standard-setter for bringing new ideas to London's high streets. This project is an exciting opportunity to revive and improve Willesden High Road bringing positive change to the area. The project is delivered with support and advice from Design for London and runs from October 2011 to March 2012.

A further exciting element of the Mayor's Outer London Fund work in Willesden Green is the 'Library Lab' which is hosted by Architecture 00:/ in association with New Windows on Willesden Green in the Willesden Green Library Centre.

From October to December a curated series of window animations was installed along the High Road marking the 25 days leading up to Christmas. Local Willesden shop-owners were paired with emerging designers to produce an advent calendar of window displays along the High Road. In addition, a series of public events was held on 16-18 December along the high street and in the project's Pilot Shop, a formerly vacant unit at 45 Walm Lane which the project reactivated and used as its key local information point. As a result of the reanimation of this empty premises for the project, it became more of an attractive proposition and a new commercial tenant has just taken on a new lease there.

From January to March 2012 the second phase of the project concentrates on bringing life back into vacant properties along the High Road, providing start-up companies with the opportunity to take up short-term residencies at reduced rents. This programme is complemented by the 'Library Lab' which provides local enterprises, businesses and start-ups with business clinics, capacity building workshops and a co-working space.

The Outer London Fund
The Mayor of London's Outer London Fund is a three-year initiative dedicated to strengthening the vibrancy and growth of high streets and their environs. At the centre of the initiative is funding of up to £50 million, supported by the offer of advice from the Mayor's Design for London team that can be targeted at improving the character, quality and economic vitality of selected high street places.

Outer London Fund support is allocated in two rounds; the first provides an immediate opportunity to access funds and advice for clusters of readily deliverable projects. These should make a visible, contribution to the vibrancy and self-confidence of high street places in the near future. On 3 August 2011 the Mayor announced the Round One successful bids - the award of nearly £10m of funding to 20 boroughs across the capital. The London Borough of Brent received £500,000 for Willesden Green.

The second round will continue the package of support, adding more places and shifting the balance towards more substantial physical projects that can deliver lasting improvement.

Enquiries for London holiday rental properties for summer 2012 131 times greater than for 2011

Figures from HomeAway.co.uk, UK arm of the market leader of the online holiday rentals industry, reveal that London homeowners are benefiting from an unprecedented demand for holiday rentals during the London Games. Demand for rental properties in London for the Olympic summer of 2012 has increased by 131 times as compared to the previous year.

It is expected home owners looking to cash in on the leap of interest could generate an average of £4,500 by renting their home during the 16 day-long event; an average of £2,000 per week. Londoners thinking about doing this can now find out how much a property similar to theirs could make using HomeAway.co.uk’s interactive Olympic Rental Map.

The Map calculates the average income you could expect to make from your home; taking into account the rental rate increase the Olympics is expected to spark as well as proximity to sporting venues and transport hubs.

The Olympics has the potential to earn millions in rental income for homeowners in the Capital. There are currently over 700 London properties available for rent on www.HomeAway.co.uk and the company is expecting weekly rental rates for those properties to increase by almost 150% on average, echoing a trend for price spikes seen during the 2010 World Cup in Johannesburg.

Tim Boughton, UK General Manager, HomeAway.co.uk said: “We have observed a steady increase in tourists looking for holiday rentals, with particularly high peaks in demand around major global sporting events. These latest figures confirm that London will be no exception. Enquiries for London properties have skyrocketed, particularly those properties in close proximity to the key Olympics sites and with good transport links to London’s top attractions. This, combined with the expected repetition of the 150% increase in rental prices seen at the 2010 World Cup, means savvy Londoners will truly be going for gold next summer.”

Accommodation for 2012 Olympic Games to be provided by new service

A new service, providing accommodation during the London Olympic Games, has been launched by London Property Rental 2012. The properties provide accommodation for both families and groups and are located within fifteen minutes by train of Central London.

Set up by experienced property professional Carol Fox, London Property Rental 2012 provides a home-from-home experience by offering fully vetted, high quality private homes in highly desirable areas of London – all within walking distance of excellent transport links. The properties, owned by affluent families who have chosen to be away from the capital during the games, are comfortably furnished, well-equipped and provide added benefits of free parking, fast broadband and digital TV.

According to Carol Fox, Director of London Property Rental 2012, “We were approached by a friend in the United States who asked if he could rent our house during the Olympics. We saw immediately how families and groups would benefit by renting a quality family home during the 2012 Olympics rather than standard hotel rooms - especially those groups who need multiple rooms and have arranged their own travel and tickets to the London Games.”

Up to 350,000 foreign tourists are expected to visit London during the eight weeks of the 2012 Games, estimates the European Tour Operators Association, while Lord Coe has talked of up to ‘a million’ extra visitors. This far outstrips London’s estimated capacity of 100,000 hotel beds.

Says Fox, “Families and groups who want to stay together may find it difficult to find accommodation during the Olympic Games that offers the benefit of an intimate environment but which is also cost-effective. In setting up London Property Rental, we will provide a quality ‘home-from-home’ experience where guests can relax and unwind away from the games yet still be in the centre of London within a 15-minute train journey, to explore tourist attractions or access the Olympic venues.”

She added: “It’s not too late for Londoners to put their property with us for rent during 2012 Olympic Games. We are always on the look-out for high quality family homes in excellent locations with good transport to add to our portfolio.

“We are finding that a large number of London home-owners are opting to go away during the Olympics and are accessing our service to earn money by making their property available for a 2012 managed let during July and August next year. And, in a lot of cases, the rental income generated will more than cover the cost of their summer holiday.”

Businesses and organisations who are considering taking on extra staff in the lead up to the London 2012 Olympic Games can now have access to a pool of enthusiastic and available talent, who are all looking for roles related to the Games.

Created in response to the overwhelming demand from jobseekers for information about jobs with London 2012 sponsors, contractors and suppliers, Adecco, the official recruitment services provider of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, has launched www.jobsforthegames.co.uk.

Employers can now access a dedicated ‘Recruiter Zone’ of the site, where they can register and begin posting available roles and vacancies and browse through relevant CVs, using a collection of search and matching tools to identify future employees.

Job seekers already registered on the site are looking for a wide range of roles, from catering and tourism to security and cleaning work, plus technical and professional roles.

Steve Girdler, Adecco’s Director of London 2012 Partnerships, said, “Employers big and small will be looking take maximum advantage of the business opportunities provided by the London 2012 Games. In order to do so they will need to staff up and inevitably the pool of talented people is finite. The job board provides employers with a captive audience of keen and available jobseekers. In the first week of the website going live for job seekers, over 45,000 people interested in securing a role related to the London 2012 Games registered their interest, uploading their CVs and signing up for email alerts to keep them updated with new, relevant roles as they become available.

With the London Organising Committee (LOCOG) predicting that tens of thousands of new jobs will be created by London 2012 sponsors, suppliers and other businesses that will be staffing up around the Games, www.jobsforthegames.co.uk is expected to prove a key tool for HR managers, across the UK. Adecco will be highlighting all the fantastic job opportunities created by the London 2012 Games to the East London Host Boroughs, thereby helping to support LOCOG’s local recruitment initiatives in these areas.
