The New Year Brings New Work for Umbrella Company Contractors

The start of 2012 brings some great news for contractors with the publication of The Recruitment and Employment Confederation's Report on jobs in the UK in December, say Tarpon.

The umbrella company sector in the UK is celebrating after recent industry research revealed that contractors could soon see an increase in demand for their services. The news, revealed in The Recruitment and Employment Confederation's (REC) Report in Jobs for December 2011 revealed a fall in the amount of permanent appointments that month. This information comes less than a month after the umbrella company Tarpon predicted that 2012 would be a very positive year for those in the umbrella company industry.

A spokesperson for Tarpon comments: “In December 2011, we announced that we believe that the new year would bring in a lot more opportunities for umbrella companies and their contractors, because of the addition of an extra £1 billion injection in the Regional Growth Fund (RGF), and so the REC's report is really a fantastic indicator for both umbrella companies and contractors over the next 12 months.”

According to the REC, temporary billings also fell slightly last month, marking the first time they have decreased since July 2009. This news, combined with the decline in the number of permanent appointments falling in December 2011, and the recent announcement by the Royal Bank of Scotland that revealed that the Scottish business also grew in December, means that employers will be relying on umbrella company contractors and their services over the coming months.

The spokesperson for Tarpon continues: “Obviously, as an umbrella company the news that there has been increased growth in certain business sectors and therefore, the possibility of increased demand for our services is really fantastic to hear, especially at the beginning of the new year. While we did say that we believed that 2012 would be the year that more businesses and individuals would look to umbrella companies and their contractors for reliable, high-value and excellent service, it's still an absolute delight to see that our prediction appears to be coming true that at the very beginning of the new year.”

2012 Could be the Year for Umbrella Companies, Say Umbrella Company Tarpon

Tarpon
The recent news of an extra boost for the umbrella company industry, in the form of a £1 billion grant, could support half a million jobs.

The new year could be the year for umbrella companies as the industry is boosted by an extra £1 billion injection in the Regional Growth Fund (RGF), assigned to help 500,000 people find jobs in 2012. The decision to award the RGF with an extra £1 billion is not only going to be beneficial for workers, but also those in the umbrella company industry.

A spokesperson for Tarpon explains:  “The news that the RGF is going to benefit from extra money really is fantastic, because it'll help give the employment market a really great boost in time for 2012. The RGF is a two year fund that's designed to support a number of projects and programmes that create economic growth and sustainable employment. So getting this extra money means that half a million people could potentially get a new job that could last them a very long time.”

The news of the extra money, which was delivered by the Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, during a visit to the north-west of England earlier this month, has been welcomed by a number of industry insiders and job seekers alike. The focus of the fund will not only help get people into work, but also encourage private investment in the public sector. This is the second piece of good news for the umbrella company industry in as many months, as new figures from last month show that the demand for contractors has continued to rise.

The spokesperson for continued:  “For every £1 of public money put into the RGF, the private sector will put in £5, which will help jump start growth across the UK. This, coupled with the news that the number of employers that have taken on contractors has grown for the 28th consecutive month in November, means that we anticipate that 2012 is the year for the umbrella company.”

As The Agency Workers Regulations Implementation Date Closes In, UK Umbrella Company Tarpon Encourages All Recruitment Agencies and Employers To Be Ready

With the implementation date of the Agency Workers Regulations (AWR) on the 1st of October, UK umbrella company Tarpon is encouraging all contractors to be ready.

The AWR, also known as the Agency Workers Directive (AWD), is a piece of legislation which, once in force, will entitle an agency worker to the same basic working and employment conditions as would have been received if directly employed by the company, therefore enforcing equal treatment and day one rights for all agency workers.

However, according to the recent survey undertaken by The Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC), a shocking number of employers are still unaware of the new regulations. As high as 23% are unaware of the new regulations, 44% remain undecided, and only 14% of employers said they will definitely make changes for the implementation date of the AWR. Of those who have committed to making changes there has been an increase to 13%, previously 8% in July.

A positive note from the survey is the increase in 3% of employers, now at 83%, who plan on maintaining or increasing their use of agency workers throughout the next year, compared to 80% last month.

A spokesperson for Tarpon commented on the recent findings:  “This survey has established that more notice and clarity must be made to help influence the current approach chosen by organisations. We at Tarpon take employment responsibility seriously and are happy to back the new changes that the AWR will be implementing As a company we are proud to offer 100% protection against any potential employment law and tax challenges related to employees working with us.”

The REC's Director of Policy and Professional Services has also commented on the findings: “With nearly a quarter of employers still unaware of the changes the Regulations will bring, and a further 44 percent still unsure of what measures to take, there is scope for one final concerted push to raise awareness and address common misconceptions...”

Tarpon Encourages All Employers To Be Ready For AWR Legislation

Tarpon reveals that it is "excited at the prospect of new legislation known as The Agency Workers Regulation (AWR), also known as the Agency Workers' Directive (AWD). Currently planned to come into effect on the 1st October 2011."

This new legislation will allow agency workers to be entitled to certain benefits from the first day of working through to the entitlements after 12 weeks to the same basic working and employment conditions as would have been received if directly employed by the client, so enforcing equal treatment and day one rights for all agency workers.

A recent survey undertaken by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) revealed that awareness levels are currently over 70%. But the current figure of employers planning on making changes as a result of the implementation date of October 1st stands at 10%, with 42% currently considering what they should do.

Tarpon believe that it is also a major step in legislation for everyone involved in the umbrella company industry. Furthermore, they believe everyone must ensure they meet the standards that the legislation is creating.

A spokesperson for Tarpon pointed out: “We've always believed in offering our employees a genuine 'employment solution' through the promise to maintain pay during employment breaks and to always offer holiday pay and maternity pay, where this is applicable.

“We, as a company ,also recognise there is an employment responsibility involved, and as such are taking the changes the AWR introduces seriously and are proud to offer 100% protection against any potential employment law and tax challenges related to employees working with us.”

Now that the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) has published the final version of the guidance to the AWR umbrella company Tarpon believe everything has now been clearly delineated, and will allow full concentration in ensuring that everyone will be ready for the 1st October, and will back the legislation 100%.
