When Digital Becomes a Barrier: Why Vital Services Still Need a Human Alternative

Technology is supposed to make life easier. Quite often, it does.

Apps let us manage bank accounts without visiting a branch, or when we aren't near a branch.

QR codes can take us instantly to menus, information and payment pages.

Online portals allow appointments to be booked at any hour, while automated chatbots can deal with straightforward enquiries without leaving people sitting in a telephone queue for hour after hour. Taxis can be booked in seconds.

But there is an increasingly important question we need to ask: what happens to people who simply cannot cope with all this technology?

There is a danger that, in the understandable rush towards digital services, organisations are confusing digital convenience with universal accessibility.

They aren't the same thing.

Not Everyone Can Simply "Go Online"

We've probably all encountered instructions such as:

"Scan the QR code."

"Download our app."

"Use our online portal."

"Speak to our virtual assistant."

For somebody comfortable with smartphones and computers, that's usually straightforward.

For others, it can represent an almost impenetrable barrier.

Some people suffer from technophobia, a genuine fear or severe anxiety surrounding the use of technology.

Others may have learning difficulties, cognitive impairments, poor eyesight, problems with manual dexterity or conditions affecting memory and concentration.

There are also people who simply haven't developed the digital skills many organisations now assume everyone possesses.

Age can sometimes be a factor, but we should be careful about assuming this is exclusively an issue affecting older people.

There are younger people who struggle with technology too, just as there are people in their 80s and 90s who happily use smartphones, tablets and computers.

Poverty matters as well.

"Use our app" assumes somebody owns a compatible smartphone, has sufficient storage space to install another application and can afford a reliable mobile data connection.

"Visit our website" assumes internet access.

"Scan this QR code" assumes somebody knows what a QR code is and has a device capable of using it.

Those are considerable assumptions when access to healthcare, banking, utilities, transport, housing, government services or other essentials may be at stake.

Chatbots Aren't Always the Answer

Automated systems present another problem.

A well-designed chatbot can be useful for simple questions. But anyone who has spent ten frustrating minutes repeatedly explaining something to a bot only to receive irrelevant answers will understand their limitations.

Some areas of the UK be they heavily built up urban areas or rural areas simply do not have mobile digital access for a variety of reasons.

Sometimes people need to speak to another person.

That's particularly important when somebody has an unusual problem which doesn't conveniently fit into the options anticipated by the software developer.

"Computer says no" was once a comedy catchphrase. Increasingly, it can feel uncomfortably close to reality.

Digital First Mustn't Mean Digital Only

None of this means we should abandon technological progress.

Far from it.

Apps, websites, QR codes, artificial intelligence and automated systems can make organisations more efficient and services dramatically more convenient. For millions of people, they are the preferred way of doing things.

The problem begins when the alternative disappears.

Organisations providing essential or important services should maintain reasonable non-digital options. That might mean a telephone number answered by a person, a staffed counter, paper documentation or simply an employee who can help somebody through the process.

And those alternatives shouldn't be deliberately made difficult to find in an attempt to force customers online.

There's an important principle here.

Good technology gives people more ways of accessing a service. Bad implementation uses technology to take choices away.

Digital transformation shouldn't mean leaving behind those who cannot transform with it.

Perhaps the real test of technological progress isn't how sophisticated our apps, bots and online systems become.

It's whether the services behind them remain accessible to everyone.

Vodafone Business and Tata Join Forces to Accelerate UK Digital Transformation

Vodafone Business has announced a strategic partnership with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), bringing together two major technology organisations to help British enterprises modernise, improve customer experiences and unlock new opportunities for growth.

The agreement sees TCS join Vodafone Business’ expanding strategic partner ecosystem. By combining their respective strengths, the companies aim to give customers access to a broad range of connectivity, cloud, artificial intelligence and digital transformation services.

Vodafone Business, the enterprise division of VodafoneThree, contributes considerable expertise in connectivity, cyber security, cloud computing and digital services. TCS brings global experience in technology consulting, systems integration, sovereign cloud solutions, AI and large-scale business transformation.

Together, the companies will support organisations in sectors including healthcare, education, financial services, manufacturing and retail. The partnership will also work with businesses operating within critical national infrastructure, where secure, resilient and scalable digital systems are particularly important.

The collaboration forms part of VodafoneThree’s £11 billion investment programme, which is intended to create what it describes as the UK’s best network for business. This investment should provide organisations with stronger digital foundations from which to modernise their operations, introduce new services and pursue sustainable growth.

TCS also has substantial experience within the British market, having supported UK enterprises for 50 years. According to the company, its activities have helped create approximately 42,000 jobs directly and indirectly across the country.

Nick Gliddon, Business Director at VodafoneThree, said that many British companies possess the ambition to modernise but face challenges when attempting to put their plans into practice.

“The challenge for many organisations is not ambition, it is execution: making the right technology choices, integrating them properly and turning investment into measurable impact,” he explained to That's Business.

The partnership is expected to concentrate on several priority areas. These include cloud migration, AI and automation, cyber security, network modernisation, data analytics, connected business applications, the Internet of Things, managed services and operational transformation.

Vinay Singvi, Head of UK and Ireland at TCS, said the combination of AI, digital transformation, industry knowledge and technological expertise could unlock greater value for Vodafone Business, TCS and their customers.

For UK enterprises, this partnership promises more than simply access to new technology. By offering integrated expertise and practical support, Vodafone Business and TCS hope to reduce complexity, accelerate transformation and help organisations turn their technology investments into measurable commercial improvements.

Birmingham's Crimson expands AI apprenticeship opportunities as West Midlands tech sector continues to grow

As artificial intelligence and data-driven technologies reshape the workplace, one Birmingham-based company is making sure the next generation of digital professionals has the opportunity to build the skills employers need.

Digital transformation consultancy Crimson has opened applications for the latest intake of its apprenticeship Academy, offering aspiring technology specialists the chance to launch careers in AI, automation and data engineering while working on real-world projects.

Since the Academy was launched in 2019, Crimson has supported 33 apprentices through structured training programmes that combine recognised qualifications with practical experience. Many of those apprentices have gone on to secure consulting, technical and client-facing roles within the business, demonstrating how apprenticeships can provide an effective alternative to the traditional university route.

The timing is significant. The West Midlands has become one of the UK's leading technology regions, boasting the fastest-growing and highest concentration of digital companies outside London. As organisations continue investing in artificial intelligence, automation and advanced data solutions, demand for skilled professionals is increasing rapidly.

Crimson's Academy has been designed to help meet that demand by giving apprentices the opportunity to work alongside experienced Microsoft specialists on AI-powered transformation projects for both public and private sector clients. Participants gain valuable hands-on experience while developing the technical and professional skills needed for long-term careers in one of Britain's fastest-growing industries.

Cat Halstead, Change and Transformation Director at Crimson, believes investing in local talent has never been more important.

Cat told That's Business: "The technology sector is evolving rapidly, particularly with the growth of AI and data-driven services, and we need to ensure people have opportunities to develop the skills required for these careers.

"Through the Crimson Academy, we're helping people gain practical experience, earn recognised qualifications and build successful careers in technology while contributing to meaningful transformation projects."

The Academy is currently recruiting for two apprenticeship pathways: Data Engineer Apprentice – Digital Native and AI Automation Apprentice – Digital Native. Both programmes are aimed at people taking their first steps into the technology sector, regardless of whether they have chosen not to attend university or are looking for a more practical route into employment.

Former apprentice Loren Thomas, who joined the Academy in 2020 as a Software Testing Apprentice, credits the programme with transforming both personal confidence and career prospects.

"My apprenticeship gave me the opportunity to grow both personally and professionally," Loren said. "It opened doors, broadened my experience and gave me the confidence to pursue a career I'm passionate about."

With applications now open, Crimson hopes to attract talented people from across Birmingham and the wider West Midlands who are eager to play a part in the region's thriving digital economy. As businesses continue embracing AI and automation, initiatives like the Crimson Academy are helping ensure the workforce develops alongside the technology itself.

Digital Infrastructure: The New Battleground for Office Buildings

If you still think fast internet is just a “nice to have” for office buildings, think again.

A new white paper from Modern Networks Ltd makes the case that digital infrastructure is rapidly becoming a decisive factor in commercial property value, leasing success, and investor confidence.

The report, titled From Brown Discounts to Digital Premiums, explores how robust connectivity, smart building capabilities, and independently verified digital performance are reshaping expectations in the office market. In short: buildings that are digitally prepared are increasingly outperforming those that aren’t.

Certified Connectivity = Higher Rents

The evidence is mounting. Research examining Central London leasing data alongside certification records from WiredScore found that digitally certified buildings command noticeably higher rents.

Analysis by Cushman & Wakefield showed WiredScore-certified offices achieved an average rental premium of 4.1%, with the most digitally capable buildings reaching uplifts of up to 5.1%.

It’s not just about rent either. Occupancy improves too. Research summarised by WiredScore using data from Moody’s Analytics suggests that vacancy rates are around 3.8% lower in certified buildings compared with similar properties lacking digital credentials.

Tenants Now Expect Digital Certainty

The shift reflects a simple reality: tenants increasingly view connectivity as a basic utility, not a luxury.

Reliable internet, strong in-building mobile coverage, and smooth digital onboarding are now central to decision-making when businesses evaluate office space. If a building cannot demonstrate dependable connectivity from day one, it risks being discounted by potential tenants.

Introducing BuildingConnect

Alongside the white paper, Modern Networks is launching BuildingConnect, a service aimed at helping landlords and managing agents improve digital readiness across multi-let office buildings and flexible workspaces.

The approach focuses on several key elements:

resilient building-wide connectivity

clear separation between landlord and tenant IT systems

defined responsibilities for infrastructure management

documented evidence trails to support certification and due diligence

According to Managing Director James Tizzard, digital performance has moved from the server room to the boardroom.

When connectivity is reliable, documented and independently validated, it reduces friction in the leasing process and helps investors and occupiers clearly understand risk and resilience.

The New Value Narrative for Property

The wider message of the report is clear: digital infrastructure is becoming as important as location, sustainability credentials, or transport links when assessing office assets.

For landlords and investors, that means connectivity strategy is no longer just an IT issue — it’s a core component of asset performance.

The white paper From Brown Discounts to Digital Premiums is available from Modern Networks on request and through the company’s website https://modern-networks.co.uk

Startup Sniffs Out the Future: Dot Raises £4.2m to Turn Scent into Scientific Intelligence

A British technology company is proving that the future of detection may lie right under our noses.

Dot, a digital odour intelligence company, has secured £4.2 million in new funding to accelerate its global expansion and develop next-generation scent-analysis technologies capable of detecting biological change long before traditional systems notice anything is wrong.

The funding round was oversubscribed, signalling strong investor confidence in Dot’s unusual but highly promising approach to monitoring health, agriculture and environmental systems.

Key investors include Blackfinch Ventures, Pihl Family Office, long-standing supporter Luke Ding, and a new strategic investor.

Turning Scent into Data

For over a decade, Dot’s scientists have been studying the subtle chemical signals emitted by living systems. Humans, animals, plants and ecosystems all release volatile organic compounds (VOCs), microscopic airborne signatures revealing presence, health status and emerging biological risks.

Dot’s proprietary platform, dot.core™, captures these scent signatures, converting them into structured data. The result is a form of predictive biological intelligence capable of identifying problems earlier than conventional monitoring methods.

What began as academic research has now evolved into a scalable infrastructure designed to detect and interpret biological change across multiple sectors.

Four Sectors, One Platform

Dot’s technology operates across four interconnected areas:

Human health

Animal health

Plant health

Environmental monitoring

By translating scent into actionable data, organisations can move from reactive response to proactive protection, spotting pest outbreaks, disease risks or environmental changes before they escalate.

The company blends expertise from chemical ecology, insect behaviour, public health and data science, alongside laboratory testing and field research, to create early-warning solutions that are both targeted and sustainable.

Investment Fuels Global Expansion

The fresh funding will support Dot’s next stage of growth as it moves from scientific breakthrough to global deployment.

Key priorities include:

Expanding international partnerships for products such as BugScents™

Scaling scientific services across industries

Accelerating development of AI-powered odour intelligence technologies

Increasing manufacturing capacity

Strengthening validation and regulatory evidence

Professor James Logan, founder and CEO of Dot, described the investment as a strong endorsement of the company’s direction.

He told That's Busin ess: “This funding reflects confidence in our team, our platform and our ability to translate world-class science into real-world solutions. It allows us to accelerate growth, deepen partnerships and deliver earlier, smarter detection where it matters most.”

A New Frontier in Detection

Investors believe digital odour technology could transform how biological threats are identified and managed.

Backed by a growing patent portfolio and a strong scientific team, Dot aims to position scent-based intelligence as a global infrastructure for early detection across health, agriculture and environmental protection.

In a world increasingly focused on prevention rather than reaction, Dot is betting that the smallest airborne signals could provide the earliest warnings of the biggest problems.

Thriving on a Shoestring: Digital Marketing Strategies for Small Budgets

In the vast landscape of digital marketing, the misconception persists that only those with deep pockets can truly succeed.

However, the reality is that with creativity, strategic thinking, and the right tools, even businesses with modest budgets can make a substantial impact in the digital sphere.

In this blog post, we'll explore practical and effective digital marketing strategies tailored specifically for small budgets.

Content Marketing:

Content remains king in the digital realm, and it can be a potent weapon for small businesses aiming to make a big impact. Creating high-quality, relevant content that resonates with your target audience is key. Whether it's blog posts, videos, infographics, or podcasts, focus on providing value and solving your audience's problems. Additionally, leverage user-generated content and encourage your customers to share their experiences with your products or services.

Social Media Marketing:

Social media platforms offer unparalleled opportunities for small businesses to connect with their audience on a personal level. With a thoughtful strategy, you can effectively build brand awareness, engage your audience, and drive traffic to your website without breaking the bank. Focus on the platforms where your target audience is most active, and tailor your content to suit each platform's unique characteristics. Experiment with organic posts, engage with your followers, and consider allocating a small budget for targeted advertising campaigns to amplify your reach.

Email Marketing:

Despite the rise of various digital marketing channels, email remains a highly effective tool for small businesses to nurture leads and drive conversions. Build an email list of interested prospects and customers, and regularly send them valuable content, promotions, and updates. Personalize your emails whenever possible, segment your audience based on their preferences and behaviors, and continually optimize your campaigns for better results. With affordable email marketing platforms readily available, you can achieve significant ROI with a minimal investment.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO):

In a competitive online landscape, ensuring that your website ranks well in search engine results pages (SERPs) is crucial for attracting organic traffic. While SEO is a long-term strategy that requires consistent effort, there are plenty of low-cost tactics that small businesses can implement to improve their visibility. Optimize your website's on-page elements, such as titles, meta descriptions, and headings, for relevant keywords. Create high-quality, shareable content that earns backlinks from reputable websites. Additionally, claim and optimize your business listings on Google My Business and other online directories to enhance your local SEO efforts.

Influencer Partnerships:

Partnering with influencers in your niche can be a cost-effective way to reach a broader audience and build credibility for your brand. Look for micro-influencers who have smaller but highly engaged followings that align with your target market. Instead of monetary compensation, offer them free products, exclusive discounts, or other incentives in exchange for promoting your brand to their audience. By leveraging the trust and authority that influencers have already established with their followers, you can quickly expand your reach and generate buzz around your products or services.

While it's true that large marketing budgets can provide certain advantages, small businesses shouldn't feel discouraged. By focusing on creativity, authenticity, and strategic execution, they can leverage digital marketing to compete effectively in today's competitive landscape. By implementing the aforementioned strategies and continually refining their approach based on data and feedback, small businesses can achieve meaningful results and grow their online presence without breaking the bank. With the right mindset and resources, success in digital marketing is within reach for businesses of all sizes.

Strategies for Building a Strong Email List

In the world of digital marketing, the importance of email marketing cannot be overstated. It remains one of the most effective channels for reaching and engaging with your target audience. However, to make the most of email marketing, you need a strong and engaged email list.

Building a strong email list is a critical step in your email marketing strategy, and in this blog post, we will discuss some strategies to help you achieve this goal.

Create High-Quality Content

Content is king, and it's also the foundation of a strong email list. To attract and retain subscribers, you need to consistently create and share high-quality content that provides value to your audience. Whether it's blog posts, eBooks, webinars, or videos, your content should be relevant, informative, and engaging. When people find your content valuable, they are more likely to subscribe to your email list for updates.

Use Opt-In Forms

Opt-in forms are a fundamental tool for collecting email addresses. You can place them on your website, blog, landing pages, or even in the content you produce. These forms should be strategically placed and designed to encourage visitors to subscribe. Consider using pop-up forms, slide-ins, and embedded forms to maximise your conversion rate. Additionally, make sure your forms are mobile-responsive for a seamless user experience.

Offer Incentives

Entice your website visitors with incentives to subscribe to your email list. These incentives, often called lead magnets, can include free eBooks, guides, templates, checklists, or exclusive access to webinars or discounts. When people see tangible value in exchange for their email address, they are more likely to subscribe. Be transparent about what subscribers can expect in return for joining your list.

Run Contests and Giveaways

Contests and giveaways are excellent tools to not only collect email addresses but also generate buzz and engagement. Encourage people to participate by entering the contest with their email address. Make sure the prizes are relevant to your audience to attract quality subscribers. Be sure to follow the applicable laws and regulations, such as GDPR or CAN-SPAM, when collecting and using email addresses.

Segment Your List

Segmentation is the practice of categorising your email list based on specific criteria, such as demographics, behaviour, or preferences. By segmenting your list, you can send more targeted and relevant content to your subscribers, increasing engagement and reducing the risk of unsubscribes. Personalisation really is key, as it makes subscribers feel like you understand their needs and interests.

Utilise Social Media

Leverage your social media platforms to promote your email list. Share links to your sign-up forms and lead magnets regularly. Use paid advertising or boosted posts to reach a broader audience. Encourage your existing subscribers to share your content and refer friends. Social media can be a powerful tool for expanding your email list.

Optimise Email Sign-Up Pages

The design and copy of your email sign-up pages are crucial. These pages should be easy to navigate, load quickly, and clearly communicate the benefits of subscribing. Keep the form fields minimal and only request essential information. A/B testing can help you identify what works best to improve conversion rates on these pages.

Ensure Mobile-Friendliness

With the growing number of people accessing the internet on mobile devices, it's vital to have a mobile-friendly email sign-up process. Your forms and landing pages should be responsive and easy to use on smartphones and tablets to capture potential subscribers on the go.

Building a strong email list is an ongoing process that requires time and effort. However, the benefits of a strong and engaged email list are well worth it. By creating valuable content, using opt-in forms, offering incentives, running contests, segmenting your list, leveraging social media, optimizing sign-up pages, and ensuring mobile-friendliness, you can establish a thriving email list that will drive success for your email marketing campaigns. Remember to focus on building and nurturing relationships with your subscribers to keep them engaged and excited about your content.

The Advantages of Using Digital Marketing Rooms

In today's fast-paced and extremely competitive business landscape, digital marketing has become an essential component of any successful marketing strategy. While traditional marketing methods still have their place, the advantages of using digital marketing rooms are undeniable.

These virtual spaces offer a range of benefits that can help businesses connect with their target audiences, build brand awareness, and drive sales. In this blog post, we will explore the many advantages of using digital marketing rooms.

Cost-Effective Marketing: One of the primary advantages of digital marketing rooms is their cost-effectiveness. Traditional advertising methods like print ads or billboards can be costly, and their reach is often limited.

Digital marketing rooms, on the other hand, allow businesses to reach a global audience without breaking the bank. With minimal overhead costs, you can allocate your budget more efficiently to achieve better results.

Targeted Marketing: Digital marketing rooms enable businesses to target specific demographics and user groups. With tools like Google Ads, Facebook Ads, and email marketing, you can tailor your marketing efforts to reach your ideal customers. This targeted approach increases the likelihood of converting leads into loyal customers.

Real-Time Analytics: The ability to gather real-time data and analytics is a game-changer in the digital marketing world. Digital marketing rooms provide access to detailed insights about your marketing campaigns. You can track metrics such as website traffic, click-through rates, conversion rates, and more. This data helps you make informed decisions and fine-tune your strategies for better results in the future.

Global Reach: Unlike traditional marketing that has geographical limitations, digital marketing rooms have a global reach. Your brand can connect with potential customers worldwide. This expanded reach can open up new markets and opportunities that were previously inaccessible.

Personalised Customer Engagement: The ability to engage with customers on a personal level is a significant advantage of digital marketing rooms. Social media platforms and email marketing allow you to create meaningful personalised content that resonates with your audience. By understanding their needs and preferences, you can build stronger relationships with your customers.

Increased Conversion Rates: With the data-driven approach of digital marketing, you can continuously optimise your campaigns to improve conversion rates. You can A/B test different elements of your marketing efforts, such as ad copy, landing page design, and email subject lines, to determine what works best for your audiences.

Enhanced Brand Awareness: Building brand awareness is crucial for long-term success, and digital marketing rooms play a vital role in this process. Consistent online presence, engaging content, and social media interactions can help your brand stay top-of-mind with your target audience.

Adaptability and Flexibility: In the digital world, you can quickly adapt your marketing strategies to respond to changing market conditions and consumer trends. Whether it's modifying an ad campaign, launching a new product, or addressing a crisis, digital marketing allows for swift and flexible adjustments.

Competitive Advantage: Most of your competitors are already using digital marketing rooms. To stay competitive, you must embrace these platforms to reach your audience effectively. Your presence in the digital landscape is vital for staying relevant in your industry.

Measurable ROI: The return on investment (ROI) in digital marketing is more measurable than in traditional marketing methods. By tracking key performance indicators, you can calculate the exact return on your marketing investment, helping you allocate resources wisely.

Digital marketing rooms offer a plethora of advantages that can transform your marketing strategy. From cost-effectiveness and targeted marketing to real-time analytics and global reach, the benefits are substantial. To succeed in today's business environment, it's crucial to harness the power of digital marketing rooms and leverage their advantages to the fullest. Embrace the digital era, and watch your business thrive in the online world.
